Jesus taught theology through parables. His theology is in His parables. All the parables He taught were about the kingdom of God. The apostle Paul teaches us that the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. So a proper understanding of the parables would always reveal that righteousness is God’s free gift to mankind, and those who receive righteousness are at peace with God. Knowing you are as righteous as Jesus is because you received His righteousness and that Jesus paid the price for all your sins, you can live in peace with God. He is at peace with you. If those truths don’t produce joy unspeakable in your heart then nothing will.
When studying Jesus’ parables your heart should come alive to the kingdom truths of righteousness, peace, and joy! The parable of the Good Samaritan isn’t about being a good neighbor. Rather, it is about how God’s mercy will save or make you righteous, not religion and morality. The parables about the lost sheep, coin, and prodigal son show how God searches for us, as well as recovers and restores us to Himself. He does all the work, pays the price, and restores. I could go on and on, but the next time you read any of the parables Jesus taught, keep in mind He is showing us kingdom truths that revolve around righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Your heart will be thrilled.
