Have you ever heard someone say they were a “red-letter” Christian?
"If you want eternal life, go sell everything you have and give it to the poor." "if your eye offends you, pluck it out" "if you even look at a woman you have committed adultery" “unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven” “If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you” Truth is, Jesus said those things before the cross, under the Old Covenant. Jesus wasn’t expecting them to do those things, He was letting them know they couldn’t keep the law, they needed a Savior. The red-letter Jesus also gave his stamp of approval to the authority of the Old Testament law: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished”. (Matthew 5:17-18 ESV) It was accomplished when Jesus fulfilled the Law, paying the price once and for all with His shed blood. The final blood sacrifice. You don’t want to be a “red-letter” Christian, you want to be a New Covenant Christian, one that was raised from the dead with Christ and understands the work was finished.
